My clinical work is in general internal medicine, and I currently practice at the University of Calgary, Canada. My proposed research agenda is to answer the following inter-related questions: (1) Are proven and evidence-based interventions applied appropriately to patients? (2) What are the major threats to healthcare delivery? (3) How can information technology be used to optimize evidence-based medical practice? To answer my questions, I will be evaluating computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems with clinical decision support (CDS). These are powerful tools that have tremendous potential to improve decision-making, and to facilitate "best practice." I hope to understand how health information technology can be leveraged to optimize physician ordering behavior and the adoption of proven and effective medical therapies.
